Welcome to our Rainbow Series module. The Rainbow Series is a set of computer security standards and guidelines that were developed by the United States Department of Defense and the National Computer Security Center in the 1980s and the 1990s. These are commonly called the Rainbow Series because they are published in books.
And the books are different colors. The Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria or TCSEC was the orange book in the series. It provided several definitions and classes, such as D, a system that offers minimal protection. And this is for systems that have been evaluated, but don't meet the requirements for a higher division.
Systems at the C level provide discretionary protection. C1 offers discretionary security protection. And C2 offers controlled access protection. Class B offered mandatory protection based on the Bell- LaPadula Model. Systems at the B1 classification provided labelled security protection. B2 offered structured protection. And B3 offered different security domains. Systems at class A were verified to have the highest level of security and protection.
And the A1 classification had a verified design. There were several other books in the series, the red book was the trusted network interpretation of TCSEC. The green book is the department of defense password management guide. The light blue book provided personal computer security considerations. The aqua book offered a glossary of computer security terms.
And the amber book provided a guide to understanding configuration management with trusted systems. For the CISSP exam, the orange book or the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria, or TCSEC, is generally the book that is seen on the CISSP exam. And you should be familiar with the orange book.
